About

TimeInInts is a developer in the UK part of a large development team. He was inspired to write a blog to document how bad developers can be. Hopefully the blog:

  • is entertaining to anyone
  • is reassuring to those who work with bad programmers; there’s bad programmers everywhere
  • inspires junior developers: helping them understand bad code, and how to write clean code

The stories contained within are 100% real, but anonymised for legality.

Recurring characters:

  1. Derek is possibly the worst developer I have worked with.
  2. Colin represents a couple of developers amalgamated under one pseudonym.
  3. William is a developer who pretends he knows what he is talking about, yet it’s easy to challenge him.
  4. Beavis could be the new Derek. He loves making excuses on why he cannot complete his work.
  5. Becky is a tester that has several years of experience, but doesn’t show a good understanding of her role, or know how to communicate problems effectively.
  6. “Apprentice” is the person I am mentoring. He has begun to learn how to code on the job, literally starting from scratch.
  7. “Chris” my current manager.

Derek was the main inspiration for the blog, but sadly we are no longer colleagues. However, there’s plenty of other amazing stories from other developers.

Although the blog is full of rants, I will write some positive ones. These will be tagged with “Positivity”.

The name of the blog was chosen to put across the idea of weird, unexplainable design choices. It needed to convey the idea it was a developer blog, but also provides humour and may not be the most professional blog. “Stranger Coding Tings” is mainly a nod to the TV title Stranger Things, but then also a nod to Skindred’s stupid album title “Big Tings”. Expect big tings from this coding blog.
